About Our Professional Development

Visual Artists Ireland operates a wide range of professional development training and events throughout the year including workshops, peer discussion groups, seminars, talks and our annual national day for the visual arts event ‘Get Together’. The delivery of this programme is greatly supported by our relationship with local and international visual art professionals and partner organisations throughout the island of Ireland. VAI works in partnership with Local Authorities, visual arts venues and others, combining resources to support the professional development of visual artists at regional level.

This approach creates synergetic benefit by: providing high quality professional practice opportunities for artists; allowing for the development of a programme which is responsive to the needs of artists at local level and by providing capacity to expand the our reach of the programme with strategic partners. In the last few years events have taken place in Belfast, Derry, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland in Dublin, Cork, Carlow, Clare, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Portlaoise, Waterford.

The VAI Professional Development Programme works in tandem with other professional development resources and supports provided by VAI such as the The Manual – A Survival Guide for Visual Artists ,VAI Help Desk, professional practice articles in The Visual Artists News Sheet and The VAI Student Pack aimed at undergraduate and recent graduates.

But, don’t take our word for it.  Check out these comments from participants:

“It is so stimulating and refreshing to meet other artists and to hear what their obstacles are. You realise that you are not alone as a struggling artist.”
“Most of the information provided was excellent and in 95% of cases backup information was provided… I think maybe a lot of people may not engage as perhaps they presume that a working knowledge of the social networks is a requirement.”
“The introduction to the topics proved very interesting; I felt that networks were developed, promoting confidence when contracting professional bodies.”
“I attended the workshop on selling and archiving media works and found it excellent.”
“I attended a one day workshop on writing artist statements with Kerry McCall. I found her to be an excellent facilitator and it was a useful experience.”
“Any of the sessions I have been to have proved very worthwhile. I usually just pick those that are specific to me or a current project or problem and always gain the insight or information I need.”
